Lending a helping hand for a brighter tomorrow
What We Do
Founded in 2002, Hands of Hope, a registered 501(c)(3), is dedicated to lending a hand to those in need by offering mini-grants and creating systems of support with supplies, connections, and resources. Working alongside individuals and groups to identify their needs and partnering with community organizations to address them holistically, Hands of Hope is committed to helping people navigate tough times and build stronger, more resilient communities.
HURRICANE HELENE RELIEF & RECOVERY
On September 27, 2024, Hurricane Helene devastated the mountainous region of Western NC, becoming the deadliest hurricane since Katrina. The storm unleashed catastrophic flooding, landslides, and loss of life, leaving communities in chaos. Within two days, Hands of Hope Director Erin Lyden mobilized efforts in one of the hardest hit areas of Old Beech Mountain where she resides, working with the Beech Mountain Community Center to establish a supply distribution hub. With many roads and homes destroyed, Erin and a team of dedicated volunteers used ATVs and Side x Sides to deliver supplies, conduct door-to-door welfare checks, and provide hot meals to those in need.
Now, nearly two months later, Hands of Hope continues to operate one of the last distribution centers in Avery County, serving over 400 households. With plans to remain active through March 1, Hands of Hope is committed to keeping this vulnerable community supported, warm, and safe throughout the winter.
